Definitely not his best work.
By alisha holden
You know I've read some of the Bachman books and with them I was astounded. my favorite: The Long Walk. Some say its not good, but what I love is how King developed such a strong relationship between the characters in a rather short amount of space.
So this is another early work. Came after Bachman died. and I'm not very impressed. I think what King did was got a great idea, an idea that would attract people because it sounded like such a good storyline, and just ran with it. Gave it his all. But it simply just didn't live up to the high expectations such a great idea would receive.
When I first read the synopsis, I figured it would be a lot like Secret Window (remember in the movie, if you've seen it, that all the bad things that were going on in Depp's life was actually being caused by him, his alter-ego that he created?) Well this wasn't that. Instead the alter-ego became an actual human. While I was, truthfully, a bit disappointed that that was the way the story would go (it was too unrealistic for my liking) I still thought it had great potential. I thought "HOW is he going to prove that a man that never existed is causing all this chaos and not him!?" It had the making of being a story that would be a tough fix to end happily.
But it did end happily. Mainly because it ended ABRUPTLY. We never found out how Thad (the main character) dealt with the rest of his problems, where in everyone's eyes HE was still the one who had did all the damage. Its not a new story that King does that though, so I won't elaborate on how much I wish the story would've continued a few pages to tie up the loose ends.
Another thing I didn't like were the letdowns where there was supposed to be a climatic element added to the story. I.E. when the sheriff finally got a hold of the doctor and the doctor told him about the operation where he extracted the "tumor" which was actually Thad's unabsorbed twin. at the beginning of the story, it was mentioned that sometimes in the case of twins, the stronger one absorbs the weaker ones. so when the big "revelation" was revealed towards the end of the story, it was something that was simply repeated to those of us who paid attention. it wasn't shocking because we knew that already!
So as a conclusion: I loved the idea, thought it had great potential, and the ending was pretty good to me.
However, the book was very drawn out (it was hard to get through towards the end), failed to excite you at important details that were supposed to add the climax, left many open questions at the end. And personally, PERSONALLY, the characters were rather annoying to me. Thad was a nerdy, boringly plain weakling (who never seemed really afraid at the fact he might be blamed for countless murders. that should scare anyone), Liz was a strong but annoying woman who talked to much. The sheriff, who IS a key character, was probably my favorite throughout the story.
Not the absolute worst, but nowhere near as good as King is possible of getting when it comes to great stories, even for his early days.

Fascinating novel but Kindle version has LOTS OF TYPOS
By Chrissy the Stooges Woman
I won't make this a detailed review as so many others have already weighed in. I enjoyed reading it because I had already read "Needful Things", the last Castle Rock novel, and "Dark Half" provides a lot of the backstory to that - in fact, "Needful Things" is pretty much a sequel to this one.
Having said that, I must say I'm really irritated by how many typos are in the Kindle edition! And they're not just random, either. Every word beginning with the letters "cl" is changed to "d" - like "dosed" instead of "closed". Which is sometimes amusing ("There was a dick at the other end of the line") but mostly irritating (ok, did he mean "dear" or "clear"? it's not dear to me!).
Seems like someone could have taken the time to read through the damn thing just once to weed out all these things. Maybe there was a dick at the end of their line, too.

Very Dark...
By Terry R.
Not one of my favorite King novels, it was dark and very violent and not fun at all. Many of his books have a least a but of humor in them but this one was just dark and creepy all the way through. Of course it was well written and very suspenseful. I really love Stephen King and have read just about all of his books, though some I like more than others.
