Scientific-Literacy Advancing Text
By David Milliern
As far as living up to the standard of the "Very Short Introduction" series, Atkins' text does just that. It covers the targeted subject matter in a way that is not overly simplified, yet accessible. For example, the relevant equations are included, explanations of the symbols, and the meanings of the equations are explained. On the other hand, the mathematical formalism is kept to the absolute minimum, and anyone without a mathematics background will be able to read and understand the book without a problem, even if rereading some paragraphs is necessary. On top of that, key ideas are illustrated in very well put together images that nicely convey the salient points. Atkins' writing style is welcome, in my opinion, for two reasons: he talks a bit like a physicist (or maybe a physical chemist), yet he seems to have enough experience writing to a broad audience that his writing should be very manageable for a (nearly) general audience. In sum, I'd say he's style is technical, not watering down the information, why achieving a high degree of accessibility. This is the sort of thing that is needed to advance scientific literacy: a reader's mind that is willing to work through a minimally technical exposition that is geared for the person of average intelligence. It's not going to be an easy or light read for someone without some experience reading scientific writing, but it's still understandable, especially if some commitment is made by the reader to think his or her way through the book. Compared to many books in the series, expect this one to take a bit longer to read, for sure. I definitely recommend this book for any high school student taking biology, physics, chemistry, or pre-calculus courses (and anyone taking similar subjects in college), popular science readers, the general intellectual trying to dip their feet into science, and anyone (non-science educated) willing to spend (probably) more time thinking about the text than reading it.
Anyone intimately familiar with the series will know that each text tends to have a novelty that makes it worth buying (there are so many intro texts floating around on any particular subject that Oxford University Press has sought novelties for the sake of on-market staying power), rather than just borrowing from the library; as well as distinguishing it from other introductions. As a 2-star review of the book noted, the novelty is a discussion on "negative temperature," a theoretical concept that is not too popular, so far as I understand. The discussion is interesting, but it is theoretical; but I must say that I enjoyed it. However, after having borrowed it from the library, I am not sure the novelty is so good that it's worth buying. On the other hand, the exposition is so good that I may purchase it to lend out to students I tutor, which is why I give it 5 stars instead of 4.
