"KEEP THIS BOOK ON THE SHELF!"
By Bassocantor
"Until your teacher recommends that you read it," cautions the author, Jerome Hines.

I don't think Maestro Hines was joking--the book really is advanced. This book is certainly not some type of "Intro to Singing" pamphlet. It also requires careful reading and study. Plan to spend a LOT of time reading and re-reading this work. The concepts discussed in this work are not trivial, and they will most certainly not be trivial to master. Hence the warning on the opening page.

▲ For those not familiar with the author, Jerome Hines set a record for the longest career at the New York Metropolitan Opera--FORTY-ONE seasons! This includes 830 official performances, plus countless other less formal appearances. His most inspirational accomplishment, perhaps, is his opera, "I am the Way," which he performed in the role of Jesus at the Met in 1968. For those not familiar with his life, spend the time to research this great man; you are in for a treat.

▲ I believe the strongest part of this book is where Hines discusses the different sounds the voice can make. He doesn't use the term, "Register," but instead, "Voices." Either term will likely elicit much discussion within the singing community, as there is widespread disagreement about the number of registers, what to call them, how to use them--even whether they exist! I recommend you accept the author's definition--at least for a while, so you can understand the book. I like the author's terminology, and find it refreshingly easy to follow--but not necessarily easy to imitate!

▲ The book begins with a discussion of the anatomy as it relates to the voice. Maestro assigns a chapter each for Support/Appoggio, Tongue/Jaw, Larynx, then finally, "Placement and Registers." Although these "scientific" sections are useful, I think the real meat of the book follows in the subsequent four chapters.

▲ Beginning at Chapter VII, the author assigns a chapter to discuss each of the four voices:
First Voice: Male "Chest" voice (female "belting" or "raw chest");
Second Voice: Male Middle Range (female "chest voice);
Third Voice: Male upper range (female "middle");
Fourth Voice: "Supported Falsetto." This is the male "comic" voice, which is not generally used by male singers.

▲ For male singers, I suspect the "Third Voice" will receive special attention. That's because this is where many male singers get into trouble. And that's where I spent most of MY time. For example, basses or baritones will begin to strain as they approach D5/E5 (D/E above Middle C.) Hines discusses in detail this difficulty in achieving this Third Voice. If you're having trouble here, he explains, you're likely "Using the old habit of pulling the voice up front into the mask." This reader is guilty as charged. I plan to spend a LOT of time studying this chapter, and Hines' suggested resolution. Again, these are not trivial points, and they will not be trivial to master.

▲ The author wraps up the discussion of the four voices with the chapter, "The Four Voices as One." This is something that most singing teachers can agree on--making a smooth unity out of differences. The author gives sample exercises and techniques to try to unite the voices.

▲ The subsequent chapters don't focus so much on voice placement, but more things related to your career. He discusses things like: what should constitute a lesson, how to select a teacher, vocal health, opera careers, critics, etc.

▲ Finally, for those who wish to know more about this great man, there are many places to look. Jerome Hines wrote a brief, but touching autobiography, "This is my Story." His daughter in law, Pamela Hines, also wrote a much-later biography, "America's Basso." Both are worth reading. Additionally, there is much fine material on the web site of the great singer, Joseph Shore, who coincidentally, also has written online reviews of some of Hines' books. On his web site, Maestro Shore has abundant resources honoring Jerome Hines.

Here are links to the aforementioned works:

THis is My Story: This is My Song
America's Basso

✔ Honestly, I cannot say enough by this fine man. If you were to pick one male singer to study--this is the man! Highly recommend this book.
