Remembering the Early Times
By Acute Observer
The Glory of Their Times
Lawrence S. Ritter got the idea for this book in 1961 when Ty Cobb died. He would record the remembrances of major league baseball before they died. He took a tape recorder to visit the many players who were still alive (`Original Preface'). They talked about what it was like to be a baseball player and the times. Most were too old to continue playing by their mid-thirties. The recordings were edited to fit into this 26 chapter book of 360 pages, which contains the `Contents', `Acknowledgments', `Picture Credits', and `Index'. The "Enlarged Edition" contains four new chapters in addition to the original text. The original tapes are in the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown NY. ["Sports" is a form of show business that provides entertainment for many. It is a form of ritualized warfare that has emotional attachments for its fans even if they do not gamble on the outcomes. On television it requires two to three hours of viewing time, more than most movies.]
The older players are hard to find since they had no pension or Social Security for a central source on information. Ritter used the New York Public Library's collection of municipal telephone directories to locate the men or their relatives. He spent nearly six years on this quest, which began after the death of his father. Only those still alive could contribute. There is no mention of any refusals. This book tells not just about base ball but about the culture and life in America during the early 20th century. The many pictures add to its historical value. Page 29 has a picture of the First World Series. Other pages have pictures of players not listed in the `Contents'. [The book "Eight Men Out" goes into more detail about baseball in the year 1919.]
It would be impossible to report their stories into one page so I will only list the twenty-six players. The `Index' contains references to other players who were not interviewed. Here are the names of the twenty-six players interviewed for this book: Rube Marquard; Tommy Leach; Davy Jones; Sam Crawford; George Gibson; Jimmy Austin; Fred Snodgrass; Stanley Covelski; Al Bridwell; Harry Hooper; Joe Wood; Chief Meyers; Hans Lobert; Rube Bressler; Babe Herman; Edd Roush; Bill Wambsganss; Sam Jones; Bob O'Farrell; Specs Toporcer; Lefty O'Doul; Goose Goslin; Willie Kamm; Heinie Groh; Hank Grennberg; Paul Waner.
